Now…when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
Did you hear that? He loved them to the end. What a precious, amazing, hopeful truth for me to cling to.
But it does raise one question: How? How did He accomplish such a marvelous feat? That’s what I really want to know. Because if He did it, then I’m supposed to do it, too.
He loved them to the end, despite their stupidity and misunderstanding (John 13:7, 22, 28-29, 37).
He loved them to the end knowing what that end would involve (John 13:1, 3, 11).
He loved them to the end through the bitterest of betrayals (John 13:38).
He loved them to the end though they loved him not back (John 14:7-9).
He loved them to the end when they forsook Him and left Him alone (John 16:32).
He loved them to the end so much that He gave them Himself (John 13:2-17, 14:15-18).
Again, how, how, HOW?! I cannot even grasp what kind of love could love such ones as these to the end. Or such a one as me, who fails to imitate Him in this. Love His own to the end? He did, but I can’t. Sorry, people. Don’t look to me. My love isn’t that big.
Look to Him.
